1. It was 95 degrees today and I bought winter gloves. You just have to grab a good deal when you find one, and I found a good deal! I am a firm believer in the power of The North Face winter wear. Hibbett Sports had boys' The North Face Denali gloves (with Etip) for $9.99. I bought every pair that would fit someone in our family.

2. My granddoggy, Chloe, had surgery today to remove bladder stones. They are hoping with a new food regime that future stones will be avoided. This is her second bladder surgery in 7 years.

3. Even though I went to the store to get groceries today, I couldn't come up with anything that sounded good for dinner. So everybody got to choose what they wanted to eat from our restaurant choices of Subway, Sonic, DQ and take-out Chinese. By the time I drove around and got everybody's food I could have fixed a meal. Who am I kidding ... it was worth it.

4. I sat down this evening and planned out our school days and breaks for the 2015/2016 school year. Doing this ensures that we get all of our required hours accomplished. Every step of planning gets me more and more excited to start our full school year. We are planning to start our full schedule on August 31st.

5. Our school planning has us with two scheduled trips to Florida this year. We will drive my mom down in early October (to leave her there for a couple of months until my dad goes back to get her) and will stay and have some fun for about a week. While there we will visit one of our favorite places, the National Naval Aviation Museum, this time with a focus on WWII planes, aircraft carriers, and subs as a kickoff to our studies. (Every time we go there we are able to focus on a different aspect of the museum.) Then we are going back to Pensacola at the end of the school year taking a detour to New Orleans on our way there to go to the National WWII Museum to conclude our year-long WWII studies. On that trip are taking our best friends from Oklahoma.

  1. I have a great book I got for a blog tour and review that would be perfect for you year long study. Courage and Defiance Stories of Spies Saboteurs and Survivors in World War II Denmark by Deborah Hopkinson.

Just let me know if you would like it. I can mail it to you after I'm done with it.

  2. We are going to start our school year on Aug. 10, I think! My daughter wanted to start 2 weeks ago so I let her. I am excited about starting but I am also enjoying the break from teaching.
Sometimes take-out is a sanity saver. There have been times when I have decided take-out or going out to eat is just easier than thinking about making food, even if I have a menu planned.

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
