Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hi! Remember me? Yeah, getting on this old blog has been an impossibility as we have wrapped up the "Summer of the Wedding". Kyndal and Collin's wedding reception was last Saturday, and it was a great time! But we are exhausted! The little kids and I are at my parents' lake house enjoying a few days of rest with our best buds from Oklahoma. I am determined to get caught up on my blog this week. I will be posting about 4th of July, wrapping up the weddings, and the wedding reception. Next week I hope to be back on track with regular posts.

So how about if we Hodgepodge today?

July 15th is National Give Something Away Day. What can you give away? Will you?

I'm having a garage sale next Friday and everything in it will be 50 cents. (That's practically giving it away.) When the sale is over I am donating it all.

Do you have a mantra? Please share with the class if you feel comfortable doing so.

Esse Quam Videri ~ To be rather than to seem.

Who does the grocery shopping in your house? How many times a week do you shop? Do you make a list or pray for inspiration in the produce aisle?

I do all of the grocery shopping in my house unless I send someone to the store for a specific item. I make a big grocery shopping trip, with a list, every other Friday. I plan meals for the two weeks and shop for those items as well as the regular things we eat every week.

Is there a TV show you're embarrassed to say you watch? You're going to tell us what it is, right?

Orange is the New Black. I will say that I do turn my head or skip ahead through the lesbian scenes. I don't need nor do I want to see that.

A recent article listed fifteen words we should eliminate from our written vocabulary in order to sound smarter ... that, went, honestly, absolutely, very, really, amazing, always, never, literally, just, maybe, stuff, things, and irregardless. Of the 15, which word is your most overused?

Mine is probably 'amazing'. When I was in comp classes in high school and college, I was always (ha, I just used one, and another one) called out for overusing the word 'great'.

So apparently dying your hair gray (in your youth!) is a thing right now. It's called 'The Granny Hair' trend. Your thoughts?

Nope. Just nope.

A while back Buzz Feed asked members to share the most beautiful sentence they've read in a piece of literature. A hard thing to narrow down, at least for me, but let's try. What's one of the most beautiful sentences you've ever read in a piece of literature?

Insert your own random thought here.

Honestly, there is absolutely nothing as amazing as leaving behind stuff and things to literally take some time to think about where you went this past year, irregardless of whether it was to a good place or bad, to reflect on the things you will always do and maybe never do again, and to just really hope and dream of those things that will make your life very much more joyful.

  2. Very good random thought. Excellent use of all those overused words. I tend to say great and amazing too much, otherwise, I would have used them to compliment you on your random thought.

  3. Relaxing at a lake house sounds so nice! I was thinking of Dr. Seuss for a quote this morning but didn't come up with any. Love the one you chose.

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
