Wednesday Hodgepodge

Yeah, well I fell off the blogging bandwagon again. Oops. I have actually even had a couple of posts completed and then not published. Sometimes I just find myself wandering away from the computer. It usually coincides with an increase in the amount of reading I am doing, and I am doing tons of reading these days.

But I'll jump in on Wednesday Hodgepodge today. Thank you, Joyce, for giving us a fun place to land each week.

Create an acrostic using the word LOVE.

Loving
Others
Voraciously
Everyday

Does love really conquer all? Why or why not?

I think so. I read somewhere one time that every single problem in this world is the direct result of a child not being properly loved. Let that sink in. That doesn't mean each child should be loved in the same way, necessarily, because we all have different needs and love languages. But, if Hitler had been loved "properly", would he have become the monster that he did? If that teenager down the street was properly loved, would he be going down that path he is going down now? Maybe the love is tough love. Maybe the love is sheltered love. Maybe it's as simple as just hearing that he or she is loved, just hearing the words.

Tell us about a time recently where you really put your heart into something.

I put my heart into homeschooling my kids. I take this job so seriously. I don't do it just for its educational value, but also for the relationships it provides us. I spend hours each week thinking on our lessons, making plans, preparing, implementing ideas, and thinking of the future. I would say that most of my time, energy, and heart goes into this profession.

What's your favorite fictional love story?

Landon and Jamie in A Walk to Remember. "But our love is like the wind. I can't see it, but I can feel it."

Do you generally wear your heart on your sleeve or keep your cards close to the vest?

My cards are shoved right into the pocket of my vest with the button fastened. I used to be an open book, but I have found that it is much safer just to keep my opinions and my personal thoughts and feelings to myself.

What food says love to you? Why?

Coffee. Coffee says love to me every day. And I say 'I love you, too.'

When were you last 'tickled pink' over something? Explain.

We are going to be grandparents and that gets me pretty tickled. The first time we saw and heard the heartbeat of our first grandbaby, it took my breath away. It was magical. Unfortunately, that baby went to be with Jesus shortly thereafter. Our second grandbaby is on the way now, and we have seen the heartbeat on an ultrasound, but have not yet heard it. We are anxious for that moment!

Insert your own random thought here.

Does anybody else look at the upcoming presidential elections and think, "Oh, Lord, please be with us."

  1. Sorry for the loss of your first grandchild, but rejoicing that another one is on the way! Yes, our country needs God now more than ever before, especially to lead us through the election.

  2. I'm so happy for your very exciting news, and pray all continues to go well with the pregnancy. As to your random thought-yes! Wow. I feel like the problems in our country are so deep, so wide, so expansive and complex that no one person is going to fix anything. Yes a change in leadership may steer the course in a new direction, but I don't think anything can be fixed by a President, no matter the party. I don't think anything will change in America unless we turn our hearts to God. I pray for that. I don't see it happening now, but I do pray for that and believe nothing is impossible with God. I honestly don't know how people without faith cope, and I guess many don't cope very well. Stepping down now from my soapbox. That last line just really resonates with me.

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
