Wednesday Hodgepodge

Give us three rhyming words that say something about your Thanksgiving holiday (or your most recent holiday gathering if you didn't celebrate Thanksgiving).

Squabble, gobble, wobble. What's a holiday without a little family disagreement? But it was all good and we enjoyed our Thanksgiving weekend together. My older kids had the funny idea to put two lemon halves under the skin of the turkey breast to make a "female" turkey ... *ahem*! It was so disturbing, but very funny. But it made the turkey really sour. We won't do it again, but it garnered some laughs. And, of course, after eating until we could burst, we definitely wobbled for a couple of days. I think I am still wobbling.

When did you last say, 'the more the merrier'? Did you mean it?

I don't remember the exact time I last said it, but I do say it pretty often (or something with the same meaning). I don't always really mean it deep down, but I try to be all-inclusive so if someone asks if someone else can come along, I always say "sure." And it usually turns out to be a really fun time with all of those extras.

What's one piece of advice you'd give someone who is your same age?

Exercise, moisturize, reenergize. (This was easier than coming up with three rhyming words in the first question.)

You're ordering a veggie plate, what four veggies are on it?

Cherry tomatoes, green pepper slices, cucumbers, and carrots.

Shop til you drop! Did you? Have you ever? Will you between now and Christmas?

Oh my, did we! And we do it every year. We are some of those sickos that go to Walmart on Thanksgiving night (but this year it started at six and we had already paid and were out the door by 6:15). We left our house at 6:30 a.m. on Friday morning to Black Friday shop and got home at 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday Rick and I went to The Plaza in Kansas City to take my computer to the Apple Store for repair and walked out with a new laptop. Then we stopped at The North Face before going to dinner. I have online shopped like a crazy woman. And now I am done shopping! My mom, sister, daughter, and I will go shopping on Christmas Eve morning after breakfast together just to pick up any last-minute bargains. Yeah, we are shoppers.

What's your favorite chair in your house, and why is it a favorite?

Well, I love to sit in my striped chair in my living room that was a garage sale find for $35. It's super comfy. I usually sit in this chair to teach. But my favorite chair is my antique rocker that was my grandma's. There is something special about rocking my grandson in that chair.

Share an early memory of faith, religion, or spirituality.

Speaking of my grandma, I have such vivid memories of looking down the hall early on Sunday morning after we had spent the night with her on Saturday night to see her sitting at her kitchen table with her coffee preparing her Sunday school lesson to teach to her adult class. My grandma's faith and church devotion always made me feel closer to God.

Insert your own random thought here.

Around all of the shopping, our family did gather together for a nice meal on Thanksgiving Day. It was an extra special one for us as it was our first with our grandson, Bennett.

  1. Wow, that's some serious shopping! Your grandson is adorable : ) I'm sure you're enjoying spoiling him as all grandbabies should be.

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
