Tuesday Coffee Chat

Today I am guzzling coffee during Coffee Chat time. You know how most people suffer from Hump Day on Wednesdays? For me, it's Tuesdays. I think I feel rested up and inspired over the weekend and then overachieve on Mondays. Then Tuesday mornings hit and I am a zombie. And as I sit here on the couch with a blanket on my lap and two doggies snuggled up close, I know that in about an hour I am going out to run and it's dark, cloudy, windy and a cold 35 degrees that feels like 25 with the wind.

But for now ... Time to share that favorite holiday recipe.

 Do you have your Christmas menu prepared? We do traditional turkey and fixins on Thanksgiving, so I always want to do something different on Christmas. I always start the morning with biscuits and gravy and cinnamon rolls for my family and my parents. Then in the afternoon I prepare a large dinner for anybody who can be here, including extended family.

This year's menu consists of:

Rosemary and Garlic Roasted Pork Loin
Party Potatoes
Green Bean Casserole
Stuffed Mushrooms
Bacon-wrapped Jalapeno Poppers
Homemade Macaroni and Cheese
Apple Salad
Homemade Cranberry Sauce
Sweet Potato Cornbread
Pumpkin Spice Cake Roll
Pecan Pie Bars

One of the favorites out of that menu is Stuffed Mushrooms. I adapted a recipe from the Pioneer Woman a few years ago and the men of my family love it when I make these. They go quick!


This menu is one of the reasons why I will soon be braving the cold for my run.

    We traditionally do a turkey at Christmas... but I like the sound of doing something different like the pork loin. Especially if we are not having a big crowd. I did Thanksgiving this year, so my sister will do Christmas at her house. But I love, love stuffed mushroom caps, and yet I have never tried to make them. Should definitely give this a go at some point.
    And I feel ya about the exercise! I've kicked everything up a notch these final weeks before holidays, just knowing that it's the most fattening time of the year!! LOL

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good.
